1. For every high priest, being taken from among men to act in behalf of men, is appointed to serve in the things pertaining to God in order that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2. And he is able to deal gently with those who sin in ignorance and those who have been led astray, since he himself is also encumbered with many weaknesses. 3. And because of these weaknesses, he is obligated also to offer sacrifices for his own sins, exactly as he does for the people. 4. Now no man takes the honor of the high priesthood upon himself, but only he who is called by God, in the same way as Aaron also was called. 5. In this same manner also, Christ did not glorify Himself to become a High Priest, but He Who said to Him, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” 6. Even as He also says in another place, “You are a Priest forever according to the order of Melchisedec”; 7. 1. 大祭司都是從人當中選出,以代表身份人行事,指定從事神指派的事,是代人獻上禮物和贖罪祭;
2. 大祭司以溫和的態度,處理那些因無知而犯錯的。他們是被引入歧途走差了的,之所以如此,是人本身有許多弱點。
3. 正因為大祭司有弱點,會做出錯事,就要為自己所犯的過錯獻祭。
4. 沒有人有資格取代大祭司的職份,只有蒙神呼召的,像亞倫,是被呼召的。
5. 同樣的原則,基督不是以成為大祭司為榮,是神對基督說:你是我的兒子,今日生的。
6. 有另一處也說:是照著麥基洗德的位份,而成為永遠為祭司。
7. 基督,在肉身的日子,為人生出悲鳴和淚水,向神祈求能從死亡中救拔出來。基督心存敬畏,神聽了。
作者繼續向當時的猶太人說,祭司做代贖看似是一樣,實際上有分別,這處將人在職份上當的祭司,與耶穌是神兒子的身份當的祭司,是不同的。
當時猶太人的大祭司跟耶穌當大祭司不同的地方:1. 大祭司是由人選出來,耶穌是神差派 (v.1)。2. 人選出來的大祭司是人,會犯錯,自己也要為自己犯錯獻祭,耶穌是卻不曾犯錯。3. 基督的身份不同於人,被稱為神的兒子,被呼召,被差派 (v.4-6) ,成為永遠的大祭司。
更為明顯與人選的大祭司不同,他們不一定對犯錯的人生感同情憐憫,因為是一份差事,不是被召去將犯錯的人挽回,是因為犯錯成了不潔,並不能因此親到聖壇獻祭,由大祭司代行。而大祭司自己也會犯錯,就失去了這資格。因此世上按情理,是無法在人間有一位全然無錯的大祭司,可以作為代贖。
神差兒子(是一稱謂讓人明白箇中的關係),因為在世不曾犯事,也沒有過錯(說明人是可以不去犯錯,例如敬虔渡日),基督就有這份資格上的要求,再加上基督對人性軟弱,無知做成那苦困人生,情感上也難以平伏(這是作者的描述),這些說明了人選的大祭司,跟神差的兒子,在代贖上莫大差異,這差異是在救贖上有沒有功效的根本緣因。
主要分別是:救贖不是工作,是一份感同身受的付出,是有感情的不是求獎賞的。
