1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the conviction of things not seen. 2. For by this kind of faith the elders obtained a good report. 3. By faith we understand that the worlds were created by the word of God, so that the things that are seen were made from things that are invisible. 4. By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it, though he died, he is yet speaking. 5. By faith Enoch was transported so that he would not look upon death, and was not found because God had transported him; for before his departure it was testified of him that he pleased God. 6. Now without faith it is impossible to please God. For it is mandatory for the one who comes to God to believe that He exists, He is everything that He defines Himself to be as revealed in the Word of God.and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 7. By faith Noah, after being divinely instructed by God about the things he could not yet see, was moved with fear and prepared an ark for the salvation of his house; through which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8. By faith Abraham, being called of God to go out into the place which he would later receive for an inheritance, obeyed and went, not knowing where he was going. 9. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, like a foreigner, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the joint heirs of the same promise; 10. 1. 信心是所望之事的實底,是未見之事的確實。
2. 前輩憑著這份信心,得出了榮美的證詞。
3. 憑著信心,知道世界的出現是根據神的說話創造出來,那麼現在看得見的,是從看不見的反照出來。
4. 亞伯因著信,向神獻上比該隱更美的祭物,便得到了遵守神說話的明證,神驗證了他有信心的恩賜;藉著這份信心,即或死了,他的信仍在為自己說話。
5. 憑信心,以諾被提升了,不用經過死亡,也不被人發現。因為在他離開之前,己經被神驗證過,且得蒙神的喜悅。
6. 沒有信心就不能得神悅納。因為來到神面前,必須信有神。神是用話語去定義世間的一切,並賜賞給尋求的人。
7. 挪亞有信心,在接受神有關指示,都不曉得是什麼,卻以敬畏的心行事,去預備了一隻方舟,讓全家得救。藉這事件向世人作出了譴責,憑信心,成為公義的接班人。
8. 亞伯拉罕憑信心,蒙神呼召,去到一處地方,是將來要繼承的,他順從就去了,卻不知是哪裡。
9. 單憑信心,就在應許之地上居住下來。像外來的,住在帳篷,與以撒和雅各一起,都是蒙受應許的。
10. 他們在等待一座城,是神,既是這城的設計者,又是監工建造者。
希伯來書作者看壬信心,他列舉猶太人的先祖,能在大境遇當中仍不失為人的本性,有份力量去堅持的,都是對神有信心的。為什麼要信心而不是忠心?
這個似乎同華人的傳統對神觀的差異而來,華人文化是管人是人最高的成就,這種權力是天授,這個天明顯就是能力的代表。創造人的神,從開始就不以這種人為最高的理想為準,而是人與人之間的真實相處之道:彼此在愛中互助成長,因為神是愛。
此處作者以猶太人的家譜,它就像華人的族譜一樣,是可以相信的歷史,可以循此尋根問底。
而猶太人的家族文獻,更是能引至神的創造。華人也有自己的神觀,它沒有之前也沒有之後,只留在傳說那個階段,沒有歷史可尋。
猶太人人相信的神,可以從他們的歷史當中,從舊約到新約,都是由一族的歷史當中承載下來。這神不是由崇拜得來,而是憑信心。這是很特別的說法,神不是高高在上,而是與人同等,互相尊重。神不會主動干涉人的行差踏錯,人也不用去理會神對人的要求,可以相安無事,各自過日子。
這可以說明神不用人去敬拜,也不用人對神有忠心,因為各自活在不同的領域。
人什麼時候需要神?是人自己走頭無路的時候,需要一個外來的幫助,而人靠不住。
因此人間世有二種情況出現,一是,相信自己,又能不擇手段的;另一是,相信自己,卻受制於良心的局限。如果有意願意按良心辦事的,是容易讓神參與的。於是讓有心人在這需要上鑽空子,用人定的律例規範人的行為,由此成為人的權威,藉神的名義。
希伯來書作者在這段說明,人只要相信神做足矣,不用對神忠心,是神對人忠心,那是因為愛。人沒有足夠的信心,就不會對神有足夠的忠心。忠心必然是全然愛的表現。不像去求,因為自己的缺乏,這是人為的功利誘惑,就不要上當了。因為人到神面前求的不是人力以外的物事,而是人求進步的心志,信神的人不求物質,而是心志時,就只有心靈誠實可以回報。
