1. 太初有道，道與神同在，道就是神。

2. 神在，這道就存在。

3. 萬物的存在，是因為神。當中任何被創造的，沒有一樣能離開神而存在。

4. 在神裡面是一種生命，擁有這生命的人就有光在他裡面。

5. 這光能把黑暗照亮，為的是黑暗不接受光。

15. 我約翰，是為道成肉身作見證，並宣告：這就是我曾說過，在以後來那位，成就會超過我。

16. 從道成肉身的他，我們所得的，是何等豐豐滿滿，是恩上加恩。

17. 律法是從摩西流傳留下來，只是恩典和真確的道理是從耶穌基督來的。

18. 從來沒有人見過上帝，只能是父懷裡的獨生子能將神明明白白的展示出來。

約翰福音不是書卷，是一部傳記，就是個人的自傳。似乎這傳記是可以與啟示錄一起連讀，就明白為何作耶穌的先鋒，因被啟示耶穌的到來，也解答耶穌是基督，到世間來的用意。

這引言是以哲學的方式去論說耶穌到世間來的目的：神的道，是人生的一道光，這光的作用是不讓世界變得黑暗。就是啟示錄在結尾時描述的新天新地，再沒有黑暗存在的意義相同。

這世界的存在，第3-4節就說得明白，是因為神的創造。而神的創造很特別，在任何的創造物當中，都是有生命，這生命是光，是正面，因此神稱之為[好]。明顯這處描述生命中的光，不是燈光或陽光，是人性的正面表達，而黑暗就是人性的黑暗那一面。因為這表達的方式，是形而上的說法。但也可以不用哲學去形容，那就是一種借喻。這惜喻很恰當，因為很容易明白所謂光明和黑暗是指什麼，而無須多作解釋。

光和黑，是對立，互不相容。今日的世界，光和黑都不明顯，只因人的私把光和黑混和成了灰，這種模稜兩可就是讓人逃避責任或不願承擔的借口。這樣是一種人為的掩飾，引發出各樣的不實和欺詐的行為，這樣的處理方法，讓黑看來不見，讓世界的人不懂分辨的話，以為世界還是很好，看事第不再立體，成了片面，當面對不好的結局來臨，也沒有了警惕。

因此，在17節：律法是從摩西流傳留下來 (許多人只守人間法)，只是恩典和真確的道理是從藉信耶穌基督來的愛 (那是人本有的心法)。這句說話真的很有意思，也破除了不守法世界會亂的謊言。當然只有一類別的人會顯得這樣不同，那是誠心相信又堅定持守信心的人 (啟示錄常常提到)，那是因為常在光中，就把黑暗驅走的緣故。

當人疑懷這句不守法世界會亂的話，只說明一點，對自己對神都顯得信心不足，有耶穌這個人為證(v.18)，也有那位堅信的你，因為你就是那光的兒女(v.12)。
