13. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14. And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money exchangers sitting there;
15. And after making a scourge of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with both the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money exchangers, and overturned the tables.
16. And to those who were selling the doves, He said, “Take these things out of here! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise.”
17. Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “The zeal of Your house has eaten Me up.”
18. As a result, the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, seeing that You do these things?”
19. Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20. Then the Jews said, “This temple was forty-six years in building, and You will raise it up in three days?”
21. But He spoke concerning the temple of His body.
22. Therefore, when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scriptures, and the word that Jesus had spoken.
23. Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed on His name, as they observed the miracles that He was doing.
24. But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all men;
25. And He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. (A Faithful Version)
13. 猶太人的逾越節近了，耶穌就上耶路撒冷去。 
14. 在聖殿裡發現有賣牛、羊、鴿子的，也有兌換銀錢的，在那裡開檔做買賣。 
15. 耶穌看見此場景，用繩子織成鞭，把牛羊趕出殿去，又推翻兌換銀錢的桌子，錢幣散滿一地。 
16. 又對賣鴿子的說：把你的東西拿走！不要讓我父的家，成了商舖。 
17. 門徒聽到這話，記得經上曾記：看到這個家變得如此，心裡實在難受。(詩69：7-12) 
18. 這事引來猶太人的質問：你這樣，算是給我們看神蹟奇事？ 
19. 耶穌這樣回應：現在推毀這殿，三日後就會重建起來。” 
20. 猶太人不屑的說：這殿用了四十六年建造完成，你能三日內建成？ 
21. 耶穌指的是，他的身體就是這殿。 
22. 所以當耶穌從死裡復活的時候，門徒便記起這說過的話，為此便更為相信聖經和耶穌所說的話。 
23. 在耶路撒冷過逾越節這段時間，許多人看到耶穌所行的奇事，就信了。 
24. 耶穌對這些人不存信任，因為了解他們的想法。 
25. 耶穌並不需要人去認同他這個人，因為他知道人心中謀算的是什麼。

約翰這段的描述，並不能完全照字面去解釋，這段記載沒有神蹟，卻行了奇事，說了人不明白的 [常識和預言] ，例如：聖殿應有的功能是敬拜的場所，又三日之後把聖殿重建。為此用21-22節去解釋20節的意思。這意思在當時的人並不明白。因此，當中有許多人，與耶穌相處幾日，他們發現耶穌是一位智者。因此耶穌在24-25節就有了對這些說相信的人，他們沒有相信，只是敬佩耶穌言論。這段記載是回述前事，是將當時的觀察到的，在此表達耶穌那時候的心境。耶穌指出人說相信，當中有不同的理解，這是文人相惜，而不是真的相信耶穌是主。

什麼事讓這些文人相識？

第一件：耶穌的膽識。耶穌進耶路撒冷，第一件事就是去聖殿。看到聖殿作為商業用途，是環境的誘因，多人進出的地方就自然產生商用的價值。耶穌反對不是商業本身的價值，而是侵佔聖殿用地這種不良的慾望。這做法反映出許多人為生活或者生存，濫用了自由，忘記該有堅持。神給人自由，因為人有神的形象：能創造。這自由是不叫人去侵犯或毀掉既存又正面的價值。人算什麼？許多人不敢說出真相，耶穌說出。

第二件：是耶穌說話當中包含的哲理。舊殿須時四十多年建造而成，耶穌說三日。有識之士一聽此言，當會明白這句話有更為哲學的解釋，這些人當然不明，正正是不明才產生興趣，要聽耶穌解釋，因為知道必有更深的意義，出於好奇想去了解。這些好奇之人不是因為耶穌，是因為追求學問。似乎耶穌沒有即時解釋。耶穌明白這些人心中想的，不說明，就有了約翰對這反應的描述：耶穌對這些人不存信任，因為了解他們的想法。(v.24)
