34. Now I do not receive witness from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35. He was a burning and shining light, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36. But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works that the Father gave Me to complete, the very works that I am doing, themselves bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37. And the Father Himself, Who sent Me, has borne witness of Me. You have neither heard His voice nor seen His form at any time. 38. And you do not have His word dwelling in you, for you do not believe Him Whom He has sent. 39. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think that you have eternal life; and they are the ones that testify of Me. 40. But you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life. 41. I do not receive glory from men; 42. But I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; but if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44. How are you able to believe, you who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, in whom you have hope. 46. But if you believed Moses, you would have believed Me; for he wrote about Me. 47. 34. 我(耶穌)說自己不會承認人作的見證,在此說這人作的事,是讓你們明白什麼是得救。
35. 約翰他就是一道燃燒而閃耀的光,相信你們也曾在他的光中歡呼過。
36. 我要比約翰作更大的見證,是父吩咐去成就,就是他(約翰)證實我是被父差來的。
37. 父神差我來,自己會為我作證。那些發生的事,是你們從來沒有聽過,也沒有看過。
38. 這些道未曾安住在你們心裡,因為你們不信我(耶穌),是被神差來。
39. 你們當中有人去查考經書,這些人找到永恆生命所在,他們給我作了見證。
40. 只是你們不肯到我這裡,來得那生恆的生命。
41. 我不受從人來的讚譽,
42. 我十分了解,你們心裡沒有神的愛。
43. 我(耶穌)奉父的名來,你們不接待。若是人用自己的名,你們倒去接待。
44. 你們怎可以聽這些人相互的觀點,卻不去尋求從獨一神給大家的觀點?
45. 我(耶穌)不會在父面前作出控訴。有一位,是你們對他深存盼望的摩西,會控訴你們。
46. 你們若是信任摩西,理應信我,是他寫了許多有關我的事蹟。
47. 如果你們不相信他寫的經書,又怎能相信我的話呢?
這段描述在當時的人的一個慣性,相信認識的人,他們之間探討神的種種說法,卻不信耶穌對他們作的見證 (v.44)。按道理,相信摩西寫的五經,也應該信耶穌。
約翰這段記述是挑戰人那慣性的思維方式和相信事物的邏輯。
對於一般猶太人對神所作的解釋,耶穌在當時是不會接受這些說法。只有一位是例外,就是施水禮的約翰,許多人相信約翰的見證。
耶穌呢?按經文的記述,當時這些人,也許就是受過水禮的人,似乎都不相信耶穌是神差來,因此,耶穌說了一句:43-44 我(耶穌)奉父的名來,你們不接待。若是人用自己的名,你們倒去接待。 你們怎可以聽這些人相互的觀點,卻不去尋求從獨一神給大家的觀點?更指明既然相信摩西,為什麼不相信他?緣因是他們沒有愛神的心 (v.42)。
約翰記述耶穌這個挑戰的言談,似乎是反映一個事實:人會接受自己熟識的人說的話,和識識識的事物,有熟識的理解,不容易接受新的,有歷史承傳,合邏輯也符合現況的應用的新道理。
看來約翰記述這個挑戰的言論,不單在當時是個提醒,它何嘗不是在今日也有同樣的提醒。這種慣性依循,是有時間及環境因素所左右。當時間改變,地點不同,生存條件不斷進化,原則的運用比守當時立例,更為重要。
文化的保留以及條例的應用,當然有其存在的價值,卻不是去阻止前進的步伐的理由。這些物事要如何跟進,適合當前社會,就不是單純守舊可以處理,而是因時制宜,運用的是在原則上以邏輯合理這等常識的轉化而來,得出新的處事待人的方法去應對。否則,時代是進步,人的思想卻落後,就產生大量的矛盾,也由此制造麻煩。守舊是一種私心,自己不進步也拉人一起不進步。
耶穌提出一個嚴肅問號,信神或是信人?
