16. Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband and come back here.”
17. The woman answered and said, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have spoken well in saying, ‘I do not have a husband’;
18. For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. This you have spoken truly.”
19. The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, but you say that the place where it is obligatory to worship is in Jerusalem.”
21. Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father.
22. You do not know what you worship. We know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
23. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is indeed seeking those who worship Him in this manner.
24. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
25. The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming, Who is called Christ; when He comes, He will tell us all things.”
26. Jesus said to her, “I Who speak to you am He.”
27. Now at this time His disciples came, and they were amazed that He was speaking with a woman; however, no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”
28. Then the woman left her waterpot and went away into the city, and said to the men,
29. “Come and see a Man Who told me everything that I have done. Can it be that He is the Christ?”
30. Then they went out of the city and came to Him. (A Faithful Version)
16. 耶穌此刻說:去找你的丈夫把他帶來這裡。
17. 婦人回應:我沒有丈夫。耶穌說:你說自己沒有丈夫,確實如此。
18. 你有五位丈夫,現在的那位並不是你丈夫,這方面很坦然承認。
19. 婦人說:先生,我覺得你真是個先知。
20. 我的祖先一直在這山區作敬拜場所,你倒說,有一處地方才是真正敬拜之地,就是耶路撒冷。
21. 耶穌對婦人說:你當信我。當時候一到,人的敬拜不在這山,也不在耶路撒冷。
22. 你自己不知在敬拜什麼。我知道為什麼,救贖本來就源自猶太這個民族。
23. 時候到來人就明白,那是今天。真實的敬拜,用的是心靈和誠實。父神需要的,確實是那些人,以這種方式作出崇敬的人。
24. 神是靈,拜他,必須以心靈和誠實敬奉。
25. 婦人回應:我是知道彌賽亞會來,是稱為基督的。他來,會將一切事件給我說明。
26. 耶穌說:和你說話的就是他。
27. 就在此時,門徒回來。大家都驚訝他與女人談天說地。只是沒有人問:你知她是誰?或是為何要跟她交談?
28. 見門徒回來,婦人就留下水罐,回城裡去,對其他人說:
29. 趕快去,有一個人知道我的一切,他可能就是那基督?
30. 於是一眾人等便出城,去找他。

這位撒瑪利亞婦人是位相信神的猶太人,只是因為環境身處撒瑪利亞,就有了向一個方向作為敬拜,這動作像是今日的伊斯蘭教,這位婦女心清,清心的人得見神。
這又是位誠實的婦人,她沒有丈夫。這沒有也許就是丈夫死了,因此她不是放任情慾的婦女,而是心中有神的,只因丈夫身亡,就依著當時的傳統,由丈夫的兄弟當成了財產,承繼過來。丈夫有多少兄弟,便由這些兄弟共同的負責。今日當然不是這樣,時代轉變了一切。
耶穌跟她談完了活水,便曉得這位婦人是誠心信神,就指出信神的真正意義所在:不在外而是在內。因此耶穌說:21. 你當信我。當時候一到,人的敬拜不在這山,也不在耶路撒冷。婦人的傳統20. 我的祖先一直在這山區作敬拜場所,你倒說,有一處地方才是真正敬拜之地,就是耶路撒冷。她是伊斯蘭教卻也是猶太人血統,有著神對亞伯拉罕的應許。
這對話很有意思,就是信神在應用在實際的生活和生存上當有的方式,是在心裡。當時不論是伊斯蘭教或猶太教,都有自己敬拜的方式,有自己聚集的地方,就像今日的教會。耶穌說的為什麼不同人的處理方式?二者之間怎樣可以不矛盾而共存,是個值得思索的地方。
這婦人跟耶穌一接觸,就明白耶穌就是不一樣。這是婦人心清所致,好沒有認為傳統就是真理的化身,好是明白什麼是道理,是自己明白而不是依附什麼規條說法。這思想當然會對現實產生衝擊,明白原因,也就有了解,就可以純良而靈巧去處理日常事務。
這婦人這份心清,能驗了神的應許:八福中的心清得見神。
