37. Although He had done so many miracles in their presence, they did not believe in Him,
38. So that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled who said, “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39. For this very reason they could not believe because again Isaiah said,
40. “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their hearts, and be converted, and I would heal them.”
41. Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory and spoke concerning Him.
42. But even so, many among the rulers believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue;
43. For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
44. Then Jesus called out and said, “The one who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him Who sent Me.
45. And the one who sees Me sees Him Who sent Me.
46. I have come as a light into the world so that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.
47. But if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48. The one who rejects Me and does not receive My words has one who judges him; the word which I have spoken, that shall judge him in the last day.
49. For I have not spoken from Myself; but the Father, Who sent Me, gave Me commandment Himself, what I should say and what I should speak.
50. And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore, whatever I speak, I speak exactly as the Father has told Me. (A Faithful Version)

37. 耶穌在這些人的面前行過許多神蹟奇事,就是不相信,

38. 先知以賽亞的話,有可能實現,他曾說:主啊,誰會相信我們的見證?我們所傳的有誰信呢?對這些人來說,主祢那膀臂何曾向他們顯露過?

39. 因此,深知他們不會信,因為這些人根本反對以賽亞所說的。

40. 這些人是眼瞎,心硬,當看不到,心裡也不想明白。就是不想去回轉,得醫治。

41. 以賽亞說那些有關神的事,是因為這份榮耀是他見過,也就樂於去談論。

42. 雖然有人不信,有好些領袖還是相信。只因有法利賽人在場,當下就不承認,怕會被趕出會堂。

43. 法利賽人是喜愛個人的榮辱,勝過將榮耀歸神。

44. 耶穌此時發言:相信我,事實不是信我,是信那位差我來的。

45. 人看見這個我,是見證那差我來。

46. 我是以[光]到世間來,叫每位信我的,不再在黑暗裡。

47. 若有人聽到我的話,不信,我不會對此作評論。我來不是去審判,而是要拯救。

48. 不接受、是不接受我說的,這些話本身會對這人作出審判。而說過的話,在末日也以此作為判詞。

49. 我不憑己意說話,是受託於差我來的父所吩咐,該說什麼,就講什麼。

50. 我明白這囑咐是關乎那永恆生命之道,更會鄭重看待所說的,當中說的話,是照足父所吩咐的。

這段經文分成二節,由37節到43節是約翰描述當時法利賽人的反應的描繪,這些人不信先知。不信的原因,是他們對所謂事實的認知,須要客觀事實此其一。問題是誰定[客觀],第三者就必然客觀?所以客觀的要求是用來作狡辯。耶穌從來沒有引用客觀的說法,而是他的說話跟行為是否相稱,即是說的,和行為表達的一致。耶穌也提出過不要看表面現象作判斷,是看這現象產生的緣由。若以法利賽人的不信為例,他們是有心要去除耶穌(這是因為覺得耶穌假借神差來這名義),就算是客觀的事實,都不會承認。因為承認了,就是自己不對,又不悔改,當如何下台?

耶穌在此作出客觀的陳述:是差我來那位,叫我如此行。對耶穌而言,這是客觀的評論。只是人有知識的局限,又因人有私心,就不在光明中行事。

耶穌用光明和黑暗作比對,耶穌在光明一面,就反映出法利賽人在黑暗一面。

什麼是光明?就是堂堂正正,人人可見的處事方式。黑暗的事就是見不得光的辦事手法。持守民主主義的,持這些主張的人,許多不會自己堂堂正正,親力親為去辦事。為什麼?因為用言詞可以光明正大,都是說說,可以否認。當人說他做假,就會叫人拿證據,說什麼口講無憑。辦事從來都是指下屬執行,若有差錯,是執行的錯,那是最好的推諉,因為證據不在吩咐是在執行。是不是很可恥的方式?這是法利賽人展示的方式,就不是堂堂正正的,是黑暗的。

耶穌的光明行事,是關乎那永恆生命之道,是照足父所吩咐的。這些人眼見耶穌的作為,為什麼不能當真?
