1. Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples,

2. Saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down on Moses’ seat as judges;

3.  Therefore, every judgment that they tell you to observe, from the law of Moses observe and do. But do not do according to their works; that is according to their traditions. for they say and do not.

4. For they bind heavy burdens and hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of men; but they will not move them with one of their own fingers.

5. And they do all their works to be seen by men. They make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders of their garments;

6. And they love the first place at the suppers, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

7. And the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’

8. But you are not to be called Rabbi; for one is your Master, the Christ, and all of you are brethren.

9. Also, do not call anyone on the earth your Father; for one is your Father, Who is in heaven.

10. Neither be called Master; for one is your Master, the Christ.

11. But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

12. And whoever will exalt himself shall be humbled; and whoever will humble himself shall be exalted.

1. 耶穌與領袖對話完，就對眾人和使徒說：

2. 文士和法利賽人，他們是坐在摩西那個位置上。

3. 正因如此，凡吩咐去遵守的，審視後才去履行。只是不照足所吩咐的，他們只說不做。

4. 理由是這些人將一切加上條條框框，使人難以執行。就吩咐人去執行，自己連根手指都不動。

5. 他們以這方式樣處理，是為了把限制弄得寬鬆，，把衣袖加長好讓手伸得更遠。

6. 這些人喜愛筵席上的首位，會堂裡的高位，

7. 喜愛在市場這些公眾地方，被人大呼拉比，拉比！

8. 你們不要被人稱為拉比，你們當中只有一位，就是耶穌。其他的都只能稱兄道弟。

9. 遇到任何人，都不要稱之為父，能被你稱為父的，那位在天上。

10. 不用去尊稱其他人為師傅，因為在你們當中只有一位，就是基督。

11. 在你們當中確實有能力的，要有僕人的樣式。

12. 那是凡自高必降為卑，自卑的必升為高。

出埃及記13章，有這樣的記載，是個很好的例子：

1.耶和華吩咐摩西說：2. 頭生的要分別為聖歸我；以色列中凡頭生的，無論是人是牲畜，都是我的。3. 摩西就向民眾說：……….

11. 摩西說：當耶和華照他向你和你祖宗所起的誓將你領進迦南人之地，把那地賜給你的時候，12.你要將一切頭生的獻給耶和華；你牲畜中頭生的，公的都歸耶和華。13.然而，凡頭生的驢，你要用羔羊贖回；若不贖牠，就要打斷牠的頸項。你兒子中的長子都要贖出來。14.日後，你的兒子問你說：這是甚麼意思？ 你就說：耶和華用大能的手將我們從埃及為奴之家領出來。15.那時法老固執，不肯放我們走，耶和華就把埃及地所有頭生的，無論是人是牲畜，都殺了。因此，我把一切頭生的公的牲畜獻給耶和華為祭，卻將所有頭生的兒子贖出來。16.這要在你手上作記號，在你額上作經匣，因為耶和華用大能的手將我們從埃及領出來。

由第8-10節展示的觀念更為重要。那是基督信仰不同於宗教的基本緣因，它的解釋來源在事蹟的記載本身，它隱含的意義就更為震撼，是解釋的時候，不能加增。上述的例子就是最好的說明，耶穌對摩西的解釋，以至後來的人再去對摩西的解釋，這樣的一個過程，產生出來的後果，被形容為手伸的過長，界線模糊範圍太廣。它不好的地方是  [過了] ，就會被 [有心] 人利用，作為私慾的合理化。
