1. And the LORD said to Abram, “Get out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house into a land that I will show you.

2. And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great. And you shall be a blessing.

3. And I will bless those that bless you and curse the one who curses you. And in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

4. Then Abram departed, even as the LORD had spoken to him. And Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

5. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the people that they had gained in Haran. And they went forth to go into the land of Canaan. And they came into the land of Canaan.

6. And Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, unto the Oak of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

7. And the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your seed.” And he built an altar there to the LORD, Who had appeared to him.

8. And he moved from there to a mountain on the east of Bethel. And he pitched his tent with Bethel toward the sea and Hai on the east. And he built an altar there to the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

9. And Abram journeyed, going on toward the south.

 (A Faithful Version)

Based on the search results, here’s what we know about the distance from Haran to Moreh (Shechem):

The journey from Haran to Canaan was approximately 480 miles (775 km) .

Shechem (where the Oak/Plain of Moreh was located) sat roughly in the geographic center of Canaan, about 32 miles (51 km) north of Jerusalem

Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran, and the journey likely took six to twelve months

For a straight-line reference, the distance from Ur to the Jordan River (near Canaan) is approximately 630 miles  and Haran sits along that route in what is modern-day Turkey

So, from Haran specifically to the Oak of Moreh at Shechem, the distance would be somewhat less than the full 480-mile Haran-to-Canaan journey, since Shechem is in the central part of Canaan rather than its southern end. A reasonable estimate would be roughly 400–450 miles, though the exact figure isn’t precisely stated in the sources.

Shechem   was an ancient city in the Southern Levant, located in the central hill country of Canaan, near modern-day Nablus in the West Bank.    It is identified with the archaeological site of   Tell Balata, just east of Nablus.    Shechem holds significant biblical importance as one of the earliest sites associated with the patriarchs.

  • Biblical Significance:
    • First mentioned in   Genesis 12: 6–7, where   Abraha m arrived and built an altar at the oak of Moreh, receiving God’s promise of the land.
    • Jacob   later purchased land in Shechem (Genesis 33:18–19), where the   rape of Dinah   (Genesis 34) occurred, leading to a violent retaliation by her brothers Simeon and Levi.
    • Joseph’s tomb   was located there, where his bones were buried (Joshua 24:32), and it became a site of covenant renewal under   Joshua, who assembled Israel at Shechem to reaffirm their loyalty to God (Joshua 24).
    • It served as the   capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel   after the split from Judah, chosen by Rehoboam   and later fortified by   Jeroboam I (1 Kings 12:1–25).
  • Geography & Strategic Importance:
    • Situated between   Mount Gerizim   (south) and  Mount Ebal   (north), Shechem controlled a key east-west pass connecting the Jordan Valley to the Mediterranean coast.
    • The fertile valley, fed by abundant springs, made it a vital agricultural and trade hub.
  • Later History:
    • Became a prominent   Samaritan religious center   during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
    • Known in the New Testament as   Sychar, the site of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at   Jacob’s Well  (John 4:5–26), symbolizing the universality of salvation.
  • Archaeological Evidence:
    • Excavations at Tell Balata reveal   Middle Bronze II (c.  1900 BCE) fortifications, Cyclopean walls, and a gate complex, consistent with biblical and Amarna letter references.

Today, the site is part of the Palestinian Authority, and   Nablus   (formerly Flavia Neapolis) is the modern city that grew from the ancient settlement, though the ruins of Shechem lie just east of it.

Bethel  was an ancient Israelite city and sacred site located in the central hill country of Canaan, approximately 10–12 miles north of Jerusalem.   Its name, meaning  “House of God”  in Hebrew, reflects its deep religious significance in biblical tradition.

  • Biblical Origins: First mentioned in   Genesis 12:8, Bethel was where   Abraham   built an altar after arriving from Shechem.   It later became the site of   Jacob’s  dream  of a ladder to heaven (Genesis 28:10–19), where he named the place Bethel and anointed a stone pillar as a memorial.
  • Historical Significance: Originally known as  Luz, a Canaanite city, it was captured by the tribe of Joseph (Judges 1:23) and later became a major religious center.   The   Ark of the Covenant   was kept at Bethel during the period of the Judges (Judges 20:26–27).
  • Divided Kingdom Era: Under   King Jeroboam I, Bethel was established as a center of idolatry with a golden calf, a move that led to strong prophetic condemnation by   Amos   and   Hosea, who referred to it as   “Beth-aven”   (House of Wickedness).
  • Archaeological Site:   Most scholars identify Bethel with the modern village of   Beitin in the West Bank, northeast of Ramallah.   Excavations reveal layers of settlement from the Iron Age, including evidence of a major fire in the 13th century BC and destruction by the Assyrians in 724–722 BC.
  • Later History: The city was resettled after the Babylonian exile (Ezra 2:28) and remained inhabited through the Roman period. It was later fortified by the Maccabees and mentioned in Josephus’s accounts of the First Jewish-Roman War.

Bethel’s legacy endures as a symbol of both divine revelation and spiritual apostasy in Israel’s history.
