2. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

3. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him (whom Sarah bore to him) Isaac.

4. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

5. And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

6. And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, so that all who hear will laugh with me.”

7. And she said, “Who could have said to Abraham that Sarah would suckle children? For I have borne a son to him in his old age.”

8. And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast the day that Isaac was weaned.

 (A Faithful Version)

In ancient times, babies typically cut off milk feeds (weaned) much later than today, usually between 2 and 4 years of age. While exclusive breastfeeding lasted for about 6 months, full weaning was commonly completed around the age of three, often coinciding with the eruption of baby teeth.

Key Historical Weaning Trends:

  • Ancient Rome & Greece: Children were often breastfed until age 3.
  • Ancient Hebrews: Written records suggest weaning took place around age 3.
  • Prehistoric Era: Archeological evidence shows supplements were introduced around 6 months, but breastfeeding continued, sometimes for years.
  • Variations: While common people often had to feed themselves, elite mothers or those with access to wet nurses sometimes extended feeding, while others needed to end it earlier due to time constraints.

Studies of ancient teeth indicate that while this was a general norm, rural populations sometimes breastfed longer, while urban populations tended to wean slightly earlier.
