12. And Esau said, “Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before you.”
13. But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the boys are tender and the flocks and herds with me are suckling. And if the men should overdrive them even one day, all the flock will die.
14. Please, let my lord go on before his servant and I will lead on softly, according as the flocks that go before me, and the boys, are able to endure until I come to my lord to Seir.”
15. And Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the men with me.” And he said, “What need is there? Just let me find grace in the sight of my lord.”
16. And Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
17. And Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore, the name of the place is called Succoth.
18. And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram. And he pitched his tent in front of the city.
19. And he bought a piece of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.
20. And he erected there an altar and called it El, the God of Israel.

According to the provided search context, the distance between Seir and Succoth is approximately 200 km (about 124 miles).
- This distance is cited in discussions regarding Genesis 33, where Jacob tells Esau he will meet him in Seir but instead travels to Succoth.
- Seir is located to the south (in the region of Edom), while Succoth is located to the north (in the Jordan Valley near the Jabbok River).
- Some sources estimate the distance from the meeting point near the Jabbok River to Seir as 100 miles (161 km), while explicitly stating the distance between Succoth and Seir as 200 km.
The distance between Succoth and Shechem is approximately 20 miles (about 32 kilometers).
This distance is derived from the biblical account of Jacob’s journey in Genesis 12:8, which notes that he traveled from Succoth to Bethel, and then to Shechem. While Succoth is generally identified as being east of the Jordan River (near the Jabbok), and Shechem is west of the Jordan, the 20-mile figure refers to the segment of Jacob’s travel itinerary between Bethel and Shechem, or potentially the distance between Succoth and Bethel depending on the specific interpretation of the route. However, most biblical charts and commentaries place Bethel roughly 20 miles from Shechem, with Succoth being a stop prior to or near Bethel in the broader journey narrative.
Succoth and Shechem were two key locations in the biblical narrative of Jacob’s return to Canaan, situated on opposite sides of the Jordan River. After reconciling with his brother Esau, Jacob first traveled east of the Jordan to Succoth (Genesis 33:17), where he built a house and shelters for his livestock, giving the place its name (“booths”). From there, he crossed the river and arrived in the land of Canaan proper at Shechem (Genesis 33:18), where he purchased land and pitched a tent.
The journey between these two sites reflects a transition from temporary settlement to permanent acquisition in the Promised Land:
- Succoth is located east of the Jordan in the territory of the tribe of Gad, near the Jabbok River and the route to Penuel. It is also the name of the first Israelite encampment during the Exodus from Egypt, though Jacob’s Succoth is distinct.
- Shechem is located west of the Jordan in the hill country of Ephraim, nestled between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim (modern-day Nablus). It was a significant spiritual center where Abraham first built an altar in Canaan and where Joshua later renewed the covenant.
- Spiritual Significance: Biblical commentators note that Jacob’s decision to build a permanent house in Succoth, while staying in tents in Shechem, symbolized a departure from the patriarchal tradition of so journing in faith. In Shechem, he bought land and built an altar to “El-Elohe-Israel,” marking his formal entry into the promised inheritance.
