14. And the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened. He refuses to let the people go.

15. You go to Pharaoh in the morning. Lo, he goes out to the water. And you shall stand by the river’s bank until he comes. And you shall take in your hand the rod which was turned to a snake.

16. And you shall say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go so that they may serve Me in the wilderness.” And, behold, until now you would not hear.

17. Thus says the LORD, “In this you shall know that I am the LORD. Behold, I will smite with the rod that is in My hand upon the waters in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

18. And the fish in the river shall die, and the river shall stink. And the Egyptians shall hate to drink of the water of the river.” ’ ”

19. And the LORD spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and stretch out your hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their canals, and upon their pools, and upon every reservoir of their waters, that they may become blood. And blood shall be throughout all the land of Egypt, both in wooden and in stone vessels.’ ”

20. And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded. And he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the waters in the river were turned to blood.

21. And the fish in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river. And there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

22. And the priests of Egypt did so with their secret arts. And Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not hearken to them, as the LORD had said.

23. And Pharaoh turned and went into his house; And he also did not take this to heart.

24. And all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, for they could not drink of the water of the river.

25. And seven days were completed after the LORD had stricken the river.

 (A Faithful Version)

Going without water for 7 days is typically fatal for most humans.  While survival is theoretically possible under perfect conditions (cool temperature, complete rest, high initial hydration), the body undergoes catastrophic systemic failure long before the week is over.

Physiological Timeline of Deprivation

Days 1–2: Compensation and Cognitive Decline

The body immediately enters conservation mode. The kidneys drastically reduce urine output, resulting in dark, concentrated urine. As blood volume drops, the heart rate increases to maintain blood pressure. Cognitive functions degrade quickly; even a 2% loss of body water impairs concentration and mood.  By 24 hours, symptoms include intense thirst, dry mouth, headaches, and irritability.

Days 3–5: Organ Stress and Hypernatremia

Blood sodium levels rise dangerously (hypernatremia), pulling water out of cells to preserve blood volume.  This causes cells to shrink, leading to a “doughy” skin texture and severe neurological issues like confusion, dizziness, and excessive drowsiness.

  • Kidney Injury: Lack of blood flow causes acute kidney injury as filtering units fail to remove waste.
  • Brain Shrinkage: Brain tissue physically shrinks, expanding ventricular spaces. The brain must work significantly harder to perform basic tasks.
  • Circulatory Collapse: The body enters “compensated shock,” where the heart pumps rapidly (tachycardia) while blood pressure drops upon standing.

Days 5–7: Multi-Organ Failure and Death

By day 5 to 7, compensatory mechanisms are overwhelmed. Blood volume may drop by 20–25%, leading to:

  • Hypovolemic Shock: The heart cannot circulate enough blood to keep tissues alive.
  • Toxic Blood: Waste products accumulate to toxic levels due to kidney failure.
  • Neurological Collapse: Severe confusion, hallucinations, seizures, and coma occur as the brain pulls away from the skull, potentially tearing blood vessels.
  • Cardiac Arrest: Electrolyte imbalances disrupt the heart’s electrical signaling.

Most people do not survive past this point. Death typically results from hypovolemic shock or multi-organ failure

Critical Variables Influencing Survival

The “7-day” estimate is a rough maximum for a healthy adult in ideal conditions. Several factors drastically shorten this window:

  • Temperature: In hot environments, death can occur in hours due to heat stroke and rapid fluid loss through sweating.
  • Activity Level: Physical exertion accelerates dehydration.
  • Age: Infants and the elderly have much lower tolerance. An infant can reach a critical state in under 24 hours, while the elderly may succumb within 48 hours due to diminished thirst mechanisms and kidney function.
  • Food Intake: Eating dry food without water accelerates death because digestion requires water. However, consuming water-rich foods (fruits/vegetables) can slightly extend survival time, though not indefinitely.

Magic, in the context of performance illusion, has existed for over 2,500 years, with the first recorded act by the magician Dedi in Ancient Egypt around 2,700 B.C.

  • Early Records: Egyptian hieroglyphs and papyri from circa 2,500–2,600 B.C. depict early tricks like decapitation and resurrection, as well as early versions of the cups and balls routine.
  • Classical Documentation: Magic as a reliable performance art was documented in Ancient Rome between 50–300 A.D. by a group known as the Acetabularii, who specialized in the cups and balls effect.
  • Conceptual Origins: The concept of magical thinking and supernatural practices predates recorded history, existing since prehistory as early human attempts to explain natural phenomena.
