1. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2. “Sanctify all the firstborn to Me, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, of man and of beast. It is Mine.”
3. And Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for the LORD brought you out from this place by the strength of His hand. There shall be no leavened bread eaten.
4. On this day you are going out, in the month Abib.
5. And it shall be when the LORD shall bring you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month.
6. You shall eat unleavened bread seven days, and in the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD.
7. Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And there shall be no leavened bread seen with you, nor shall there be leaven seen with you in all your borders.
8. And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out from Egypt.’
9. And it shall be a sign to you upon your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that the LORD’S law may be in your mouth, for with a strong hand the LORD has brought you out of Egypt.
10. You shall therefore keep this law in its season from year to year.

In the Hebrew month of Nisan, which typically falls in March or April, Jews primarily commemorate the Exodus from Egypt through the eight-day holiday of Passover (Pesach), which begins on the 15th of Nisan. Key observances include the Seder meal, eating matzah (unleavened bread) and maror (bitter herbs), drinking four cups of wine, and strictly avoiding chametz (leavened products) to recall the haste of the Israelites’ liberation.
Beyond Passover, Nisan is a time of spiritual renewal and specific ritual blessings. On the first of Nisan, which marks the new year for kings and festivals, the Mishkan (Tabernacle) was inaugurated; historically, some communities celebrated this as a minor New Year. Additionally, Jews recite the blessing over new blossoms (birkat ha’ilanot) upon seeing fruit trees bloom, symbolizing redemption and the renewal of nature in the spring.
New Moon:
A new moon means the start of a fresh lunar cycle when the moon sits directly between the Earth and the sun, making it look completely dark and hidden from our view. It happens about once every 29.5 days.
Science and Visibility
- Position: The sun shines on the side of the moon facing away from us, leaving the side facing Earth in shadow.
- Sky view: The moon rises and sets near the sun during the day, so it cannot be seen at night.
- Tides: The combined pull of the sun and moon creates stronger ocean tides called spring tides.
Meaning and Traditions
- Fresh starts: Many people and cultures view this dark phase as a time for new beginnings, quiet reflection, and setting personal goals.
- Calendars: Traditional and lunar calendars use the first sighting of the thin crescent just after a new moon to mark the start of a new month.
