1. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

2. “Speak to the children of Israel that they turn and camp before Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baal Zephon. You shall camp before it by the sea,

3. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ‘They are trapped in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’

4. And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart that he will follow them. And I will be glorified through Pharaoh and all his army, so that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD.” And they did so.

5. And the king of Egypt was told that the people fled. And the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people. And they said, “Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

6. And he made his chariot ready and took his people with him.

7. And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.

8. And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And he pursued the children of Israel, and the children of Israel went out with a high hand.

9. So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army. And they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

10. And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes. And, behold, the Egyptians marched after them. And they were very afraid. And the children of Israel cried out to the LORD.

11. And they said to Moses, “Have you taken us away to die in the wilderness because there were no graves in Egypt? Why have you dealt this way with us to carry us forth out of Egypt?

12. Did we not tell you this word in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians?’ for it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”

13. And Moses said to the people, “Fear not! Stand still and see the salvation of the LORD which He will work for you today, for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again!

14. The LORD shall fight for you, and you shall be still.”

 (A Faithful Version)

The number of people in a chariot varied by culture and era, typically ranging from  two to four occupants

  • Egyptian Chariots: Standardized on a crew of  two: a driver and an archer armed with a composite bow.
  • Hittite and Indian Chariots: Often carried  three  warriors: a driver, an archer, and a shield-bearer or spearman.
  • Assyrian Chariots: Heavy designs sometimes employed a crew of  four: a driver, an archer, and two shield-bearers.
  • Celtic Chariots: Typically held  two  people (a driver and a warrior), though the warrior often fought on foot after dismounting.
  • Roman Racing Chariots: Usually pulled by teams of four horses and carried a  single  charioteer.

Pi-Hahiro th is the fourth station of the Exodus where the Israelites encamped on the west shore of the  Red Sea  (also referred to as the Sea of Reeds).  According to  Exodus 14:2, this location was situated  between Migdol  (a fortified tower) and the sea, directly opposite  Baal Zephon.

Baal Zephon

The name  Baal Zephon  means “Lord of the North.” It originally referred to the Canaanite storm god whose primary sanctuary was on  Jebel Aqra  (Mount Casius) in Syria.  As his worship spread, the name was applied to various cultic sites and landmarks in Egypt, particularly those serving as navigational markers or border fortresses. The biblical narrative uses the site as a strategic landmark to describe the Israelites’ encampment before the crossing of the Red Sea.
