19. And Moses said, “Let no man leave any of it until the next morning.”
20. But they did not hearken to Moses, and some of them left part of it until the next morning. And it became rotten with maggots, and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
21. And they gathered it morning by morning, each man according to his eating. And when the sun became hot, it melted.
22. And it came to pass, on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.
23. And he said to them, “This is that which the LORD has said, ‘Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil. And that which remains over, lay up for yourselves to be kept until the next morning.’ ”
24. And they laid it up until the next morning as Moses said. And it did not stink; neither was there any worm in it.
25. And Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD. Today you shall not find it in the field.
26. Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, in it there shall be none.”
27. And it came to pass that some of the people went out on the seventh day in order to gather, but they did not find any.
28. And the LORD said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws?
29. See, because the LORD has given you the Sabbath, therefore He gives you the bread of two days on the sixth day. Let each one stay in his place. Do not let any one go out of his place on the seventh day.”
30. So the people rested on the seventh day.
31. And the house of Israel called the name of it Manna. And it was like coriander seed, white. And the taste of it was like wafers with honey.
32. And Moses said, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, ‘Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations, so that you may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.’ ”
33. And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before the LORD to be kept for your generations.”
34. As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the testimony to be kept.
35. And the children of Israel ate manna forty years until they came to a habitable land. They ate manna until they came into the borders of the land of Canaan.
36. And an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
Manna is the miraculous food described in the Bible that God provided to the Israelites during their 40-year journey through the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt. The name derives from the Hebrew question “What is it?” (man hu), which the Israelites exclaimed upon first seeing the substance.
Biblically, manna is described as a fine, flaky substance that appeared on the ground each morning with the dew, resembling coriander seed in size and white in color. It had a taste comparable to wafers made with honey or honey wafers, and it served as the primary sustenance for the Israelite community until they entered the Promised Land.
Jewish understanding of Exodus 16:31–36 centers on the manna as a divine provision and a perpetual memorial of God’s faithfulness. The text describes the manna as resembling coriander seed, being white, and tasting like wafers with honey.
An omer is an ancient Israelite unit of dry measure defined in the Bible (specifically Exodus 16:36) as one-tenth of an ephah.
- Volume: It is approximately 2.2 liters (or 2 dry quarts).
- Weight: In traditional Jewish standards, it equates to the volume of 43.2 chicken eggs and weighs between 1.56–1.77 kg (3.4–3.9 lb) of flour.
- Context: This measure was used to quantify the daily portion of manna provided to the Israelites in the wilderness and for grain offerings in the Temple
