1. And the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons, and your father’s house with you, shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary. And you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
2. And bring your brothers also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father with you, so that they may be joined to you and minister to you, you and your sons with you, before the tabernacle of witness.
3. And they shall keep your charge and the charge of all the tabernacle. Only they shall not come near the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar so that neither they nor you also may die.
4. And they shall be joined to you, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle. And a stranger shall not come near you.
5. And you shall keep the charge of the sanctuary and the charge of the altar so that there may be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
6. And I, behold, even I have taken your brothers the Levites from among the children of Israel. They are given to you as a gift for the LORD to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7. Therefore you and your sons with you shall keep your priests’ office for every thing of the altar and inside the veil. And you shall serve. I have given your priests’ office as a gift of service. And the stranger that comes near shall be put to death.”
Ancient Jewish priests, known as kohanim, were patrilineal descendants of Aaron and wore specific, elaborate vestments that signified their holy status and served to atone for various sins. Regular priests wore a plain white linen tunic (ketonet), breeches (michnasayim), a sash (avnet), and a linen cap (migba’at), while the High Priest (Kohen Gadol) wore eight additional or distinct garments, including a blue robe (me’il) with golden bells and pomegranate tassels, an embroidered apron (ephod) with onyx stones representing the tribes, and a breastplate (hoshen) with twelve precious stones.
The High Priest’s attire was uniquely ornate, featuring a golden headplate (tzitz) inscribed with “Holy unto YHWH” and a complex turban (mitznefet). According to the Talmud, these garments were not merely decorative but held spiritual efficacy, with specific items atoning for sins such as arrogance, idolatry, and bloodshed. While the Hebrew Bible provides detailed descriptions, artistic renderings are rare; however, Greek translations and Roman art suggest the priestly dress may have had a Persian or Parthian appearance, distinct from the general population.
- Common Priest Garments: Linen breeches, a plain linen tunic, a white linen sash, and a linen cap.
- High Priest Garments: Added a blue sleeveless robe with bells, an embroidered ephod, a twelve-stone breastplate, and a golden forehead plate.
- Yom Kippur Attire: On the Day of Atonement, the High Priest wore only four simple white linen garments, forgoing the “golden garments” worn on other occasions.
- Symbolism: The vestments were believed to atone for specific societal sins, such as the ephod atoning for idolatry and the tunic for bloodshed.
- Historical Context: The priesthood ended with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, after which the role became primarily honorific based on lineage rather than active temple service.
https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/12358-priest
