28. And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”

29. And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you.”

30. And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey upon which you have ridden ever since I was yours to this day? Was I ever known to do so to you?” And he said, “No.”

31. Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand. And he bowed down his head and fell on his face.

32. And the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Behold, I came out to withstand you because your way is perverse before me.

33. And the donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. Unless she had turned from me, surely now I also would have killed you and saved her alive.”

34. And Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again.”

35. And the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men. But only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.

36. And when Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him, at the city of Moab on the border of Arnon, which is in the outermost border.

37. And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able indeed to lift you up to honor?”

38. And Balaam said to Balak, “Lo, I have come to you. Have I now any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I shall speak.”

39. And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth.

40. And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam and to the leaders that were with him.

41. And it came to pass on the next day, Balak took Balaam and brought him up into the high places of Baal so that from there he might see the extent of the people.

28. 耶和華讓驢子說話：巴蘭，我犯了何事，要打我三次？

29. 巴蘭回應：你戲弄我！若有刀在手，早就剁了。

30. 驢子說：我不是你一直的坐騎？從第一天當你坐騎，可曾這樣？巴蘭回說：沒有。

31. 耶和華此時讓巴蘭開了眼，看見有位耶和華的使者，手拿著出。巴蘭就低頭面伏於地。

32. 這使者問：為何要打驢子三次？現身於此，是要阻你前路，事關偏離了正道。

33. 你的坐騎，因為看見我，三次想避開。牠不避，早就把你殺了，說真，寧願把你殺了，留牠更好。

34. 巴蘭聽罷回應：是我不對，阻你前路，因為看不到。若是不對，回頭就是。

35. 使者對巴蘭說：與這些差來的使者同去吧。你要記住，我吩咐你說什麼，就說什麼。巴蘭便與巴勒的使者們一同回去。

36. 巴勒聽巴蘭到來，就出去迎接。迎接的地方是位於亞嫩溪的範圍，離摩押的邊界。

37. 巴勒一見巴蘭，問道：我曾派人誠意邀請到來一聚，為何不來？難道看不起我？

38. 巴蘭回應：現在不就來了。我沒有話語權，我相信的那位若有說話臨到，會轉述給你知道。

39. 於是巴蘭與巴勒同回，到了 基列.戶瑣。

40. 巴勒宰了牛羊，設宴歡迎款待眾人。

41. 過了一個晚上，巴勒帶著巴蘭，領他上到 巴末.巴力 的高處，從那裡可以看見以色列民眾的分佈情況。

這段記述非常有趣有啟發。有人懷疑這不是耶和華說的，這是可以理解。因為看批評的人都是以科研的思辨方式，不是以文學述事的原則，例如耶穌說：明白比喻就明白耶和華的事：因為天國的奧秘只叫你們知道，不叫他們知道。（太13:11）。摩西是文人不是武官，科研的事例如管理學的事，在他那個位置，了解當中的原則是有可能，事實在出埃及15章到民數記8章為止，一大套管理有序的成立，從聖到俗分得清楚理得合理。

驢子的事相信是真，解釋在人如何領受。巴蘭是誠心相信耶和華，他認識以色列一族是受祝福的一群的理解，是明白箇中道理。這個描述是他看到驢子的行為，觸發起他自己的魯莽。

他的心清，看到了一些反常，三次鞭打，緣來是揭示對巴勒的三次提醒，以色列人不可碰。巴蘭要有心理準備，有足夠的內性去勸巴勒回轉，不要執意為之，讓生靈塗炭。巴蘭心有耶和華，也明白歷史發生的，更有敏銳心靈看日常事物。他內心反覆去問，這驢子今日為何如此？心清真能見耶和華的作為。
