52. And the LORD spoke to Moses saying,
53. “To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.
54. To the tribe of many you shall give the more of an inheritance, and to the tribe of few you shall give the less of an inheritance; each shall be given its inheritance according to those that were numbered.
55. But the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers, they shall inherit.
56. According to the lot shall the possession of it be divided between many and few.”
57. And these are the numbered ones of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.
58. These are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korathites. And Korah begat Amram.
59. And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom one bore to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.
60. And to Aaron was born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
61. And Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before the LORD.
62. And those who were numbered were twenty-three thousand, all males from a month old and upward, for they were not numbered among the children of Israel because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
63. These are those numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab beside Jordan at Jericho.
64. But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest had numbered when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
65. For the LORD had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there will not be a man left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.”

זוּר (zûr, H2114) is a primitive Hebrew root verb fundamentally meaning “to turn aside” or “to go away,” often specifically referring to turning aside for lodging.
From this core concept of deviation or departure, the term expands to signify:
- Being a stranger or foreigner: Describing someone outside the covenant community or household, often implying alienation or enmity.
- Strange or unauthorized: Referring to things or actions that are foreign to the Law, such as “strange fire” or “strange incense” offered in worship.
- Moral/Religious infidelity: In a specific active participle sense, it denotes committing adultery, particularly regarding the “strange woman” or harlot who leads one away from covenant fidelity.
- Loathsome: In a derived sense, it can mean something is repugnant or estranging, such as Job’s breath being “loathsome” to his wife.
The word is used approximately 76–79 times in the Hebrew Bible, primarily in the Torah (legal texts defining the status of the stranger regarding holy things) and the Prophets (depicting Israel’s spiritual adultery by turning to foreign gods).
Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, is explicitly identified in the Bible as belonging to the Tribe of Judah. He served as the representative and leader for his tribe when Moses sent the twelve spies to scout the Promised Land (Numbers 13:6).
His lineage involves a complex ethnic background due to his father, Jephunneh, who is described as a Kenizzite (Numbers 32:12; Joshua 14:6). This title suggests that Caleb’s family may have had non-Israelite origins—possibly related to Edomites or Canaanites—who were integrated into the Tribe of Judah prior to the Exodus. While some genealogies in 1 Chronicles link Caleb to the descendants of Judah through Hezron, the consistent reference to his father as a Kenizzite indicates that Caleb’s inclusion in Judah was likely through marriage, adoption, or tribal assimilation rather than direct patrilineal descent.
https://petergoeman.com/was-caleb-the-kenizzite-born-a-native-israelite/ :
Who are the Kenizzites?
Caleb is referred to as “Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite” in multiple places (Num 32:12; Josh 14:6, 14). Who are the Kenizzites?
The first mention we see in the Bible of the Kenizzites is Genesis 15:19, where the Kenizzites are listed alongside the Kenites, Hittites, Canaanites, etc. These people groups are said to possess the land which will be given to Abraham’s descendants in 400 years down the road. But we don’t have a lot of details about them.
